The Eight Blocks
Every cognitive block runs on a spectrum. Neither end is broken. Neither end is better. They are differences in what gets received, what gets amplified, and what gets produced.
The labels we use for people who process differently are almost always wrong. Lazy. Anxious. Rigid. Scattered. These are not descriptions of character. They are descriptions of tuning. Once you see the tuning, you stop fighting the architecture and start working with it.
01
What each one does when it's weighted higher or lower than the environment expects.
01
Detects that two similar inputs are, in fact, different. The gap between sounds, shapes, tones. Where cognition begins.
Rostral-Caudal Conveyor · Afferent Intake
[Perceptual Discrimination Infographic]
Low End · Under-Attuned
What it looks like
Mishears similar words. Confuses similar letters. Misses subtle changes in tone or expression. Doesn't notice details others find obvious.
How it gets misread
The input arrives ambiguous. The child is attending perfectly to a signal that didn't carry the distinction. The failure is upstream of effort.
High End · Over-Attuned
What it looks like
Notices the tag in the shirt, the flicker in the light. Detects the half-degree change in your tone. Hears background noise others tune out. Sees the seam, the flaw, the thing slightly off.
How it gets misread
They are receiving more distinctions than the room is aware of transmitting. Not difficult. Processing more.
The Way Through
02
Puts things in order and keeps them there. Steps in a procedure. Events in a story. The thread of an argument.
Temporal Gradient · Linear Pole
[Sequential Processing Infographic]
Low End · Under-Attuned
What it looks like
Tells events out of order without noticing. Skips steps in procedures. Loses the thread mid-task. Can't retrace how they got from A to C.
How it gets misread
The architecture isn't holding the chain. They are not choosing to skip steps. Effort doesn't tighten it.
High End · Over-Attuned
What it looks like
Needs to finish Step 2 before hearing about Step 3. Distressed when the order changes. Corrects others' sequence errors. Cannot skip ahead even when skipping would help.
How it gets misread
The order is load-bearing. Disrupting it disrupts the whole operation. They are maintaining structure their cognition requires.
The Way Through
03
Computes position, distance, and configuration. Where things are with respect to each other. Also holds the shape of an idea.
Spatial Gradient · Concrete Pole
[Spatial Relationships Infographic]
Low End · Under-Attuned
What it looks like
Gets lost easily, even in familiar places. Struggles with maps, assembly, spatial puzzles. Bumps into things, misjudges distances. Can't visualize how parts fit together.
How it gets misread
They are navigating without a map that stays stable. Not careless. The spatial signal isn't holding.
High End · Over-Attuned
What it looks like
Notices when something has moved. Strong spatial memory for where everything was. Thinks in maps, diagrams, layouts. May miss the meaning because they're tracking arrangement.
How it gets misread
They are holding a different layer of the information. Seeing something you're not.
The Way Through
04
Detects invariance. What stays the same across changing conditions. Finds the signal inside the noise.
Temporal Gradient · Non-Linear Pole
[Pattern Recognition Infographic]
Low End · Under-Attuned
What it looks like
Each instance feels new, even when it's happened before. Doesn't anticipate based on precedent. Surprised by outcomes others saw coming. Slow to extract the rule from examples.
How it gets misread
They are processing each event as new. Not slow. Fresh. Beginner's mind without trying.
High End · Over-Attuned
What it looks like
Sees connections others miss. Anticipates outcomes before evidence is complete. Finds meaning in coincidence. May over-connect, seeing patterns that aren't there.
How it gets misread
They are over-detecting, not paranoid. Sometimes they're right and everyone else missed it.
The Way Through
05
Detects what stays the same when everything else changes. In relational structure, not perceptual form. Abstraction on abstraction.
Spatial Gradient · Abstract Pole
[Symbolic Manipulation Infographic]
Low End · Under-Attuned
What it looks like
Needs concrete examples, struggles with "what if." Takes things literally. Misses metaphor, analogy, implication. Prefers explicit over implied.
How it gets misread
They are grounded in the instance. Not unimaginative. Implementation strength.
High End · Over-Attuned
What it looks like
Sees the principle before the example. Speaks in metaphor, analogy, frameworks. Impatient with specifics. May miss practical implications.
How it gets misread
They are operating at a different altitude. Not impractical. Strategy strength.
The Way Through
06
Reads other people. Detects intention, emotion, attention, and social position from external cues.
Reference Gradient · Lateral Pole
[Social Signal Processing Infographic]
Low End · Under-Attuned
What it looks like
Misses facial expressions, tone, body language. Doesn't "read the room." Surprised by others' reactions. Treats all social situations the same.
How it gets misread
They are not uncaring. They are not receiving. Less swayed by social pressure. Objective.
High End · Over-Attuned
What it looks like
Tracks everyone's micro-expressions. Adjusts constantly to the room. Feels others' moods as if they were their own. Exhausted by social environments.
How it gets misread
They are receiving more social information than they can easily process. Not anxious. Flooded.
The Way Through
07
Builds and maintains the internal model of you. Not your body. Your self. The subject that experiences.
Reference Gradient · Medial Pole
[Self-Reference Processing Infographic]
Low End · Under-Attuned
What it looks like
Doesn't know what they want. Disconnected from their own emotions. Describes feelings vaguely or not at all. Makes decisions based on external criteria.
How it gets misread
They are not shallow. They are not receiving their own internal states clearly. Externality is an asset.
High End · Over-Attuned
What it looks like
Deep self-awareness, constant introspection. Knows exactly how they feel, in detail. Connects everything to their own experience. May miss what's happening in others.
How it gets misread
They are processing their internal world in high resolution. Not narcissistic. Deep.
The Way Through
08
Produces novel output. Takes parsed signal and synthesizes something that did not exist before. Then delivers it to the body.
Rostral-Caudal Conveyor · Efferent Output
[Generative Creation Infographic]
Low End · Under-Attuned
What it looks like
Prefers to work with what exists. Follows templates, doesn't deviate. Uncomfortable with "blank page" prompts. Executes well, initiates rarely.
How it gets misread
They are finishers, not starters. Not uncreative. Execution strength.
High End · Over-Attuned
What it looks like
Ideas constantly, more than can be captured. Starts many things, finishes few. Bored by execution, thrilled by invention. May overwhelm others with possibilities.
How it gets misread
They are producing faster than they can execute. Not flaky. Generation strength.
The Way Through
Neither lazy nor dramatic. Neither rigid nor scattered. Neither oblivious nor anxious. Just different.
